Abstract

The purpose of this research is to evaluate elective course applications in high schools based on the views of students, teachers, and school administrators. In line with the objectives of the research, general opinions regarding freely chosen study areas, implementation of freely chosen courses in schools, program objectives, content, learning-teaching, and assessment conditions are being gathered from students, teachers, and administrators to assess selected educational courses. They claimed that elective courses do not influence students' career choices. Regarding the implementation process of elective courses in schools, teachers believe that students cannot choose courses based on their interests and abilities. It has been revealed that students primarily consult their parents and do not receive guidance services when selecting courses. Participants stated that elective courses are given to reinforce compulsory courses in terms of objectives, content, learning-teaching, and assessment conditions. Administrators mentioned that the school's physical facilities (music room, laboratory, computer lab, etc.) and equipment are insufficient for teaching elective courses, while teachers indicated difficulties in finding books/course materials for elective courses. There are enough courses available. Teachers acknowledged that the content of elective courses is prepared in parallel with compulsory courses and that class sizes need to be reduced for effective implementation of elective courses. Instructors believe that when elective courses are graded, students will take them more seriously. While students do not want elective courses to be graded, teachers and administrators agree that elective courses should be graded.
